Preventative Dental Care for Adults

Preventative Dental Care in Adults

There are several factors that apply to preventative dental care in adults, regular trips to the dentists for checkups is only one of these factors.

Dental Hygiene

The basic requirements for healthy teeth, gums and fresh breath are regular tooth brushing and regular dental visits. Often we find that patients brush their teeth several times a day but they are not using the proper technique for effective cleaning.

We offer a range of treatments - from relief from tooth sensitivity to tooth sealants - designed to help you to be more confident and feel better about the maintenance of your teeth.

One of the major factors why we have less tooth decay is the use of toothpaste with fluoride. There are fluoride supplements on the market but great care should be taken on taking fluoride supplements and professional advice MUST be sought.

Sugars, carbohydrates and acidic foods and drinks are a major part of everyday temptations and are all a major cause of tooth decay. The most important thing to remember is to limit the amount of time any item of food or drink makes contact with your teeth.

Try to limit your intake to meal times only. Tooth surface loss is a major concern - natural sugars, acidic drinks and ready prepared meals are all major causes of cavities and are a contributing factor to the need for fillings.

It is a proven fact that people who smoke are more likely to suffer with more severe gum problems. Smoking is a major factor in gum disease. Smoking and alcohol are major risk factors in cancer of the mouth and throat.

Fissure Sealants

These are preventive coatings which are placed on the biting surface of the back teeth. The procedure is completely painless and takes only a few minutes to apply. Not all teeth are suitable for fissure sealing.
